Following Sunday’s storms, the canopy over the gas pumps at the Mobil gas station located at U.S. 20 and Meridian Road collapsed, causing significant damage to the pumps. Fortunately, according to 13 WREX’s Josh Shuman, no injuries have been reported. However, the gas pumps sustained severe damage, as evidenced by videos capturing the aftermath of the storm.

Heatwave Expected to Hit Northern Illinois

In addition to the storm damage, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings about an impending heatwave. Temperatures are predicted to reach 90 degrees on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with a chance of hitting similar highs later in the week. With the heat index factored in, temperatures could approach triple digits, posing significant health risks.

The NWS Heat Risk map for Monday shows a broad splash of red across northern Illinois, indicating a level 3 out of 4 in terms of heat severity. This level of heat can affect anyone without effective cooling or adequate hydration, likely impacting some health systems, heat-sensitive industries, and infrastructure.

Extreme Heat Warning for Tuesday

The situation is expected to worsen by Tuesday when the heat map turns purple, signifying a level of rare and prolonged extreme heat with little to no overnight relief. The NWS warns that this extreme heat level will affect anyone without effective cooling or hydration, with impacts likely in most health systems and heat-sensitive industries and infrastructure.

Sunday night’s pop-up storm, which swept through northern Illinois and caused damage in Rockford, prompted a severe thunderstorm warning just before 4 p.m. The strong winds accompanying the storm were responsible for knocking down the canopy at the Mobil gas station near the U.S. 20 exit on Meridian Road.

As residents of northern Illinois brace for the heatwave, the damage from the storm serves as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. Authorities are urging people to take necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated during the coming days.
